Blue Diamond
Gem of a Hero |
In the beginning months of 1941, noted anthropologist Prof. Elton Morrow is on a return voyage from Antarctica with his most astonishing find yet, a huge blue diamond, the likes of which no man or woman has ever seen. The good Prof. Morrow's return vessel is attacked by a prowling German Nazi U-boat. A torpedo strike upon the vessel causes a terrific explosion which shatters the huge blue diamond and showers Elton Morrow with shards of diamond bits, riddling his brain with fragments. Surprisingly surviving the attack and the gemstone wounds, Elton finds himself as hard as granite and almost as invulnerable to any harm. Not only do bullets rebound from his body without effect, he can cut glass with his fingers. Dedicating himself to the fight against tyranny and the cause of freedom, meek anthropologist Elton Morrow creates the costumed identity of the Blue Diamond, champion of justice! At best, the Blue Diamond was a sporadic fellow as he was noted for only two adventures many months apart and then faded into obscurity. Comments Elton Morrow, created by Ben Thompson, gained his powers in an explosion; violence and turmoil pervaded Timelys stories. The Blue Diamonds superhuman strength and endurance are impressive powers, and his costume isnt especially lame, but he only lasted two issues. Gem heroes are pretty uncommon; comics like their protagonists to take their inspiration from animals or celestial objects. No major enemies but his final GA appearance was entitled The Hypnotized Ghosts. Like some other Timely heroes, the Blue Diamond has appeared more since the Golden Age. He was a member of the Liberty Legion, a spin-off of the Invaders, created in Marvel Premiere in 1976. Though these heroes never took off, they did let Marvel acknowledge that there were heroes other than the Big Three in the Forties. The Blue Diamond even had an adventure with the Thing in Marvel Two-In-One in the present. |
